Is Your Skincare Routine Pregnancy Safe? Here's What to Avoid

Pregnancy is a transformative journey, bringing changes to both your body and skin. Hormonal changes can trigger acne around the chin and jaw, melasma, and increased dryness, making fine lines more noticeable. Navigating these changes while ensuring the safety of your baby can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to your skincare routine. You might wonder:

- “is what I’m using safe for my baby?”

Many over-the-counter products contain active ingredients that may pose risks during this time. When applied onto the skin, these ingredients can be absorbed into your bloodstream and passed through the placenta. We asked leading dermatologist, Professor Greg Goodman AM, to explain which skincare ingredients are safe and which to avoid during pregnancy. These are the 3 ingredients that should be avoided for a pregnancy-safe skincare routine:

1) Retinoids (Vitamin A)- for anti-ageing

While retinol is great for your skin, it’s not worth the risk during pregnancy. Retinol and other Vitamin A derivatives are powerful ingredients for tackling fine lines and wrinkles, helping to speed up skin renewal and prevent collagen breakdown. But if you’re expecting, it’s important to avoid these during pregnancy as they can pose serious risks to your baby, including birth defects and developmental issues.

〜 Safer alternatives to help improve skin elasticity and texture during pregnancy include bakuchiol, hyaluronic acid, and some peptides.

2) Salicylic Acid- for acne

Salicylic acid is a popular ingredient known for its ability to exfoliate skin, unclog pores, and reduce inflammation, making it effective for treating acne and improving skin clarity. It should be avoided during pregnancy as high concentrations can pose risks such as developmental complications and potential harm to the baby.

〜 Safer alternatives for managing acne and improving skin clarity during pregnancy include azelaic acid, glycolic acid, and niacinamide.

3) Lightening Agents- for pigmentation

Prescription lightening agents are used to treat pigmentation, melasma, and dark spots by reducing melanin production. As a precaution, it's recommended to avoid using these products during pregnancy and instead opt for safer alternatives.

〜 Safer alternatives for treating pigmentation and brightening skin during pregnancy include azelaic acid, vitamin C, and licorice root extract.〜

Here's why you should be using niacinamide

No matter your skin type—oily, dry, combination, or sensitive—niacinamide is a powerhouse ingredient that can fit seamlessly into any skincare routine. It effectively addresses multiple concerns without causing irritation. Let’s take a closer look at why niacinamide is a must-have for every skincare enthusiast!

What is niacinamide?

Niacinamide is a water-soluble form of Vitamin B3—it is gentle enough for daily use and powerful enough to deliver transformative results. This multi-tasking ingredient works to improve the skin's barrier function, increase hydration, and address a variety of skin concerns including improving skin texture, targeting acne and rosacea, brightening dark spots and treating general skin irritation.

Why niacinamide deserves a spot in your routine…

Niacinamide helps balance oil production by regulating sebum levels, making it ideal for those with oily or combination skin. By controlling excess oil, it prevents clogged pores, which can lead to breakouts and enlarged pores. Over time, this regulation results in a smoother and more refined complexion with less noticeable pores.

How to incorporate Niacinamide into your routine.

Start by choosing a product that contains a concentration of 5% to 10% niacinamide, this can be a serum or moisturiser.

  • Apply it after cleansing and toning your skin, but before heavier creams or oils.

  • Use it once or twice daily, ideally in the morning and evening, for optimal results.

  • If you're using other active ingredients, such as vitamin C or retinol, introduce them gradually to avoid irritation.

  • Always follow up with sunscreen during the day to protect your skin.

Are your skincare practices making your eczema worse?

If you have eczema, your skincare routine could be making things worse without you realising it. Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is an inflammatory skin condition caused by an abnormal immune response that can make you feel itchy, dry, and downright uncomfortable.

Living with eczema means navigating a complex landscape of potential triggers such as the use of skincare products that can flare up symptoms. While there's no one-size-fits-all solution, identifying and avoiding your personal triggers is key to effectively managing your eczema and reducing flare-ups.

It’s important to understand that certain products, ingredients, or even the way you care for your skin can unknowingly contribute to flare-ups. Let’s explore eczema-safe skincare practices to keep your eczema in check and avoid unnecessary irritation.

1. Become aware of harsh ingredients.

Eczema can flare up in response to environmental triggers, making it crucial to choose your skincare products carefully. It is essential to start becoming aware of harsh ingredients in your everyday products. Avoid cleansers and moisturisers that contain harsh ingredients such as fragrances, sulfates, and alcohol as these can further irritate your sensitive skin. Instead, use products that are gentle and fragrance-free to provide your skin with the hydration it needs.

2. Avoid exfoliating products.

The use of an exfoliating product might seem like a good idea to smooth your skin, but it can actually make eczema worse. Overdoing it with harsh scrubs or strong chemical exfoliants can damage your skin's protective barrier and lead to more irritation.

3. Don’t forget to moisturise.

Eczema weakens your skin’s natural barrier, leading to dryness, cracking, and increased sensitivity. To combat this, regular moisturising is ESSENTIAL.

Applying a thick, nourishing cream or ointment can help restore your skin’s barrier, preventing excess dryness and protecting it against irritation. Make this a habit, especially after bathing, to keep your skin comfortable and well-protected.

Your skincare routine should aim to nourish and protect your skin and reduce the effects eczema. If you're unsure about your skincare choices, come in for a consultation with one of our dermatologists to receive personalised advice and treatment plans. Click here to book a consultation.

Worried about hair loss?

Are you losing more hair than you should? Let’s find out!

Hair thinning doesn’t just happen overnight. It can begin at any age and be caused by a range of factors that you might not even realise. Genetics, stress, hormonal imbalances, poor nutrition and a variety of other factors all play a role in causing hair loss…

The most common culprit? If hair loss runs in your family, it’s likely you might experience it too.

Hereditary hair loss can start as EARLY as in your 20s- But don't worry, you're in the right place!

Understanding hair loss and knowing when to be concerned is key to managing the condition effectively. This can allow for early intervention which can significantly impact treatment outcomes through preventing further thinning and promoting regrowth.

What does hereditary hair loss mean?

Hereditary hair loss also known as androgenetic alopecia is one of the most common causes of hair loss, affecting both men and women. This would typically present as a receding hairline and bald patches.

The presence of certain genes makes hair follicles sensitive to androgens. Over time, the hair growth cycle is shortened, producing finer and shorter hairs until eventually, new hair growth ceases entirely.

On average, most people lose between 50 -100 hairs per day.

This level of shedding is a normal part of your hair’s growth cycle. So, if you see a few hairs on your pillow or in your brush, it’s usually nothing to worry about. However, when hair shedding exceeds this range, it might be considered hair loss and could indicate an underlying issue.

What treatment options are available?

If you’re experiencing hair loss symptoms, consider seeking professional advice from a dermatologist to get a thorough evaluation and appropriate treatment. At the Dermatology Institute of Victoria, we offer tailored treatment plans for all stages of hair loss. These solutions are designed to revitalise your scalp, stimulate hair follicles and hair growth, improve hair density and slow down hair loss. Come in for a consultation to learn more today.

Reversing Complications from Cosmetic Procedures

Reversing Complications from Cosmetic Procedures

Have you ever undergone a cosmetic treatment only to find the results disappointing or even concerning? It happens more often than you might think. Cosmetic treatments can sometimes leave you with unbalanced facial features, disrupting the harmony of your appearance.

While cosmetic procedures are generally safe and effective, understanding the potential risks and complications is crucial for informed decision-making. Complications can manifest in various forms:

1) Asymmetrical Results… How can we fix this?

Asymmetrical results following a cosmetic procedure can be disappointing, presenting as a lopsided or imbalanced facial appearance that disrupts the harmony and symmetry of your features. This can detract from your enhancement goals, leaving you with unnatural looking results.

- On the bright side, asymmetry can be fixed! The process to restore symmetry and harmonise facial features requires a skilled practitioner and a careful assessment plan to correct any imbalances effectively. Procedures to reverse these cosmetic complications can vary from non-invasive methods with the use of enzymes to more complex surgical revisions. A consultation with a practitioner will determine the best approach.

2) Formation of Lumps or Bumps

Lumps or bumps appearing under your skin after a cosmetic procedure is a common issue and can occur due to various factors, such as your body producing excess collagen in response to the treatment.

Will this go away on its own?  - In many cases, a gentle massage and applying light pressure to the area can help smooth out minor lumps. However, the time it takes for these bumps to disappear can vary. If you find that the lumps persist or are causing you discomfort, it’s essential to reach out to your practitioner as further medical intervention may be required.

3) Increased Skin Sensitivity and Blistering

Blistering is an uncommon but possible side effect of laser treatments, often caused by excessive energy or an overreaction of the skin. Additionally, increased sensitivity in the treated area is frequently reported. This heightened sensitivity can make the skin more reactive to environmental factors like sun exposure, heat, and even certain skincare products, leading to discomfort.

To support your recovery after laser treatments, we offer topical creams designed to soothe and accelerate skin healing. Additionally, our advanced therapies effectively address complications such as blistering and heightened sensitivity.

Navigating the aftermath of a cosmetic treatment can be challenging. However, our team of practitioners are highly experienced and equipped to help reverse any complications that may have occurred. Book a consultation.

How Seasonal Changes Are Affecting Your Skin

Seasonal Changes Call For a New Skincare Routine

As the seasons shift, so do the needs of your skin. Have you noticed that your skin can become dry and dull during the winter? Cold temperatures and low humidity levels are the main factors contributing to your skin's dryness, flakiness, and increased sensitivity. This is because cold air holds less moisture than warm air, accelerating moisture evaporation from the skin. When this process is accelerated, these environmental conditions make it difficult for your skin to retain moisture throughout the season. On top of that, indoor heating systems can worsen these effects by drying out the air.

What can this look like on your skin?

  • Dryness and flakiness

  • Irritation and increased sensitivity

  • Dullness/compromised skin barrier

  • Itching, cracked skin and chapped lips

Hydration is key to a healthy skin barrier…

By adjusting your skincare routine to accommodate seasonal changes, you can prevent winter dryness and maintain a healthy complexion year-round. Winter is the time to switch to thicker, emollient-based moisturisers to provide intense hydration and restore the skin's barrier. Consider switching to a gentle and hydrating cleanser to avoid further stripping your skin of its natural oils.

To combat these winter skin challenges, it's essential to establish a staple skincare routine that focuses on hydration and barrier protection.

Tighten up your jawline with zero pain

Achieving a defined and youthful jawline no longer requires invasive procedures or painful recovery periods. We are one of the first clinics to bring EmFace Submentum to our patients, allowing them to experience the latest technology in skin tightening and facial contouring.

An example of how the EmFace submentum can reduce the appearance of a ‘double chin”

A well-defined jawline can create facial harmony by enhancing the balance and symmetry of facial features.

When your jawline is concealed by a double chin, this can alter the perceived shape and proportion of your face. A “double chin” is characterise by the stubborn pocket of fat beneath the chin, which can create an undesired rounded or sagging appearance. Despite our best efforts with diet and exercise, treating the submental area can be particularly challenging. This is because the presence of a double chin can be influenced by genetic factors which determine how your body stores fat.

How can the EmFace Submentum help?

The EmFace Submentum offers a unique approach to tightening up your jawline with zero pain, setting it apart from other treatment methods. It combines HIFES™ muscle stimulation with synchronized radiofrequency to target the double chin comprehensively. This dual approach effectively tightens and tones both the skin and underlying muscles in the submental area without causing any discomfort to the patient.

The key features of EmFace Submentum:

  • Its precision allows for customisation of the treated areas, ensuring that every session is tailored to meet your individual needs.

  • You can start to expect gradual improvements in your double chin's appearance after just four sessions.

  • This treatment has zero downtime, allowing you to resume your daily activities immediately after treatment.

If you are seeking to achieve natural-looking and long-lasting results, EmFace Submentum is the treatment to try for an innovative jawline transformation experience. We are one of the first clinics to offer this treatment. Schedule a consultation today to be one of the first to experience this innovative facial contouring solution! Do you have ‘Tech Neck’ Lines?

Your phone may be giving you neck wrinkles. Here’s what you can do to fix it.

The extended periods of time spent gazing downward on electronic devices could be causing subtle changes to your neck without you realising it. As you bend your head downwards to look at your phone or computer, this persistent posture places strain on the neck muscles and delicate neck skin. The repetitive straining motion can essentially weaken the skin's elasticity and collagen, making it more prone to wrinkling and sagging. Over time, this can lead to the progressive development of neck wrinkles and creases, also known as ‘Tech Neck.’

You may be wondering, how can we prevent the premature development of neck lines?

Tech neck can be prevented through implementing the following methods:

  1. Neck Exercises: Stretching exercises targeted at the neck muscles can help improve posture and reduce strain on the neck.

  2. Maintain Good Posture: Avoid hunching over or tilting your head downward for extended periods.

  3. Take Breaks: Incorporate regular breaks into your screen time to give your neck muscles a rest and prevent prolonged strain.

There are various solutions available…

The Importance of Consistency in Achieving Glowing Skin

Skin needling has emerged as a highly sought-after skin rejuvenation treatment in recent years, offering transformative results for various dermatological concerns. However, one crucial aspect that is sometimes overlooked is the importance of undergoing multiple treatments.

This treatment involves the use of a device equipped with fine needles that create micro-injuries on the skin's surface. These controlled injuries stimulate the skin's natural healing process, prompting the production of collagen and elastin, which are essential for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness.

The Importance of Consistency.

While you may experience some initial improvements in your skin after a single skin needling session, the full benefits are typically noticed after completing a series of treatments.

Think of it as a fitness regimen for your skin – just as you wouldn't expect to see lasting results from a single workout session, the same principle applies to skincare treatments.

How does it work?

Skin needling is a gradual process that yields progressive results over time. Completing a series of treatments will help to continuously stimulate collagen production, leading to cumulative improvements in skin texture, tone, and overall appearance.

What skin concerns can skin needling address?

This treatment can address a wide range of concerns such as acne scars, age spots, fine lines, pigmentation, pores and uneven texture. Consistency maximises the results of these treatments by facilitating continuous improvement and maintenance of skin health. Come in for a consultation to create a tailored treatment plan for your skin concerns today.
