Eye Area Problems - Puffiness
What is eye area puffiness?
Eye area puffiness is also commonly known as bags under the eyes. Along with wrinkles and dark circles, it is one of the three main cosmetic concerns in the eye area.
The eyes and eyelids are people's most powerful vehicle of non-verbal communication. Any eyelid feature - such as perpetual puffiness - can sway others' initial perceptions and impede social interaction, potentially affecting one's own self-esteem.
There are a number of reasons why these bags eventuate. As we age, the area that once successfully held the fat around the eye loses its structural integrity and starts to become lax. The supporting structures of the eye also weaken slightly, causing the eye to settle. Both of these factors contribute to the fat bulging forward. Additionally, the force of gravity makes skin sag over time. Everything falls downward when we stand up and the eye area is no exception. A loss of underlying fat and substance in the skin further contributes to the appearance of droopy skin and hollowed eye sockets.
What preventative measures are recommended?
Treat hayfever if affected and avoid sun damage, stress-inducing lifestyles and sleep deprivation. A diet rich in anti-oxidants and vitamins may be beneficial.
What are the available treatments?
Topical options
Vitamin K has long been known for its role in promoting bone strength and blood clotting. More recent studies, however, have found vitamin K creams to be beneficial, particularly when combined with retinol, in the treatment of facial bruising and naturally occurring puffiness and dark circles under the eyes. It's been suggested that vitamin K may boost the pre-existing collagen levels in the skin resulting in thicker skin and a more youthful appearance.
Other natural remedies include azulene, the German chamomile flower. This works by reducing any inflammation that can lead to puffiness of the pads beneath the eyes while also reducing the appearance of dark circles.
Products containing bioflavanoids and phytosterol saponosides also firm the skin which may reduce puffiness.
Yellow hibiscus in combination with Hesperitine and Centella extract may limit eye puffiness, increasing superficial and integral skin firmness.
Surgical options
Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is often the approach of choice, particularly for those with moderate to extreme cases. There are, broadly speaking, two techniques for performing this procedure and the newer 'posterior transconjunctival approach' is now widely favoured for its low risk factor and scar-free results.
Often, dermatologists will consider it beneficial to incorporate the use of a laser for improved results. As is the case with any surgical procedure, thorough prior consultation and consideration is required with your qualified practitioner.
