Cheek This Out

A GUIDE TO NATURAL LOOKING CHEEK ENHANCEMENT

Some people are born with full and fabulous cheeks, but gradually lose them as they age, while others feel like the natural shape of their cheeks could be improved regardless of their age.

Cheek enhancement with dermal fillers is a great option for both those who would like to restore fullness, and for those who seek enhancement of their natural shape.

Our qualified and skilled injector Dr Stefania Roberts shares what you need to know about cheek enhancement with dermal filler.

WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR CHEEK AS YOU AGE?

As we age, the support structures in our face including collagen and elastin (which keeps our skin firm) gradually start to weaken and decrease. The effects of gravity start to take hold and our face, especially our cheeks, head south.

WHAT ARE THE EXPECTED RESULTS?

“One of the benefits of treating the cheeks is that it lifts the entire lower face, preventing or even treating the formation of jowls (the sag around the chin area), and nasolabial lines/folds (the line from the corner of the nose to the corner of the mouth). For this reason, replacing volume in the cheeks is one of the most important areas to fill when rejuvenating an older face.”

Said Dr Stefania Roberts who has worked at the clinic for more than 18 years and is also responsible for training other medical professionals in Australia and New Zealand on techniques for injecting dermal fillers.

“Contouring cheeks is also a great way of creating Kim Kardashian-esque angles in a younger face and enhancing the face’s natural shape by lifting the cheeks” says Dr Roberts.

What does the treatment involve?

“Achieving natural looking cheeks is a skill that requires an understanding of the essential rules and ratios of the face. At the Dermatology Institute of Victoria we assess cheeks according to their natural fullness, any volume that has been lost or moved lower down the face, the age of the individual, the surrounding features and the symmetry of the face” said Dr Stefania Roberts.

At The Dermatology Institute of Victoria we start by meeting with the patient for an in-depth consultation on expected outcomes, product choices, potential risks and what to expect in the days following.

The procedure itself only takes around 20 minutes and most products now contain a local anaesthetic, meaning the injections are relatively pain free.

Is there any downtime?

Yes, you may look a little red and swollen immediately after your treatment and if possible, we recommend going home straight after, which is why DIV offers flexible appointments like some evening and Saturdays. Icing can help with the swelling.

It is also possible that you will have small bruises, which can be covered up with makeup the day after. Most people will be fine to return to work the following day, however it is common for you to look swollen when you first get up in the morning. Don’t be alarmed as this will subside once you are out of bed and moving around.

How long does cheek enhancement last?

Depending on the product chosen for you, cheek enhancement usually lasts anywhere from 12-24 months.
